ABC's 11th Annual Holiday Care Packages for the Homeless Event
 

About our organization and how we got started...

On December 3, 2018 from 5:30 - 8 p.m. at UC Hastings College of the Law, ABC volunteers will get together for our 11th consecutive year to assemble and distribute holiday care packages to the homeless in the Tenderloin region of San Francisco. Each care package will include items such as a poncho, hat, gloves, scarf, fleece blanket, body lotion, chapstick, hand sanitizer, socks, toothbrush, toothpaste, tissues, snacks, holiday candy and a holiday card. Each year these care packages bring smiles to the faces of many of the homeless living on the street or in shelters in the immediate area. Our volunteers will enjoy mulled wine, pizza, and holiday cookies as we work to assemble and then distribute the approximately 360 care packages and sleeping bags we are hoping to create this year. ABC - Attorneys Bettering the Community was started in November 2009 by five friends, all recent alumni from UC Hastings and Stanford law schools, searching for a way to connect with other attorneys while working to improve the communities in which they live. Our mission is to bring attorneys out of their offices and into their communities to assist those in need.

Our organization focuses on a wide range of community service projects and would love your suggestions. We are currently recruiting members. ABC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit with headquarters in San Mateo County California (see our non-profit approval letter here). This means that all donations are tax deductible!

Community Gatepath, Meals on Wheels, Samaritan House and Other Events:

Although the past several years have been relatively slow for us due to various family commitments of our board members (the majority of our board members now have young children), ABC volunteers still managed to work with some of our favorite local non-profits to make a difference in our communities as well as host our annual Holiday Care Packages Event each year in December. Below are some highlights from past years:

On Saturday June 22, 2019 from 5:00 - 6:45pm we held our Back-To-School Backpack event to benefit Samaritan House's annual Back-to-School Backpack drive. This was ABC's second year organizing this fun, family friendly event, where kids got to play on a fabulous play structure and eat pizza and cupcakes, all while raising money and awareness for an amazing cause - the need for new backpacks and school supplies for underpriviliged youth in the Bay Area. The event was a big success, not only did we all have a blast (especially the kids) but we were able to donate 17 backpacks to Samiritan House and provide them with a check for over $400 to pay for school supplies to go in them.

On December 17, 2018 at 5:30 p.m. at UC Hastings College of the Law ABC volunteers got together for our 10th consecutive year (an entire decade!) to assemble and distribute holiday care packages to the homeless in the Tenderloin region of San Francisco. Each care package included items such as a poncho, hat, gloves, scarf, fleece blanket, body lotion, chapstick, hand sanitizer, socks, toothbrush, toothpaste, tissues, snacks, holiday candy and a holiday card. Each year these care packages bring smiles to a lot of the homeless living on the street or in shelters in the immediate area, and this year was no exception. Our volunteers enjoyed mulled wine, pizza and holiday cookies as we worked to assemble and then distribute the 360 care packages and sleeping bags we were able to create this year, thanks to our wonderful donors and volunteers. 

On Saturday June 3, 2017 at La Petite Playhouse in Redwood City, ABC volunteers hosted a family party and collected donations, school supplies, and new backpacks to support Samaritan House's annual back-to-school backpack drive. Each year Samaritan House, a non-profit located in San Mateo, holds a backpack drive and collects and distributes hundreds of backpacks and school supplies to low-income youth in the San Francisco Bay Area. We had a great turnout and managed to collect 35 backpacks, 12 sharpie highlighters, 2 spiral notebooks, 60 glue sticks, 12 packs of crayons, 4 pencil cases, and approximately $627 in monetary donations! Everyone had a blast at the party (especially the kids who got to play on the huge play structure and enjoy pizza and cupcakes in the party room afterwards). We are hoping to make this a yearly event.

On May 2, 2015, ABC volunteers also came out to help with Community Gatepath's annual touch-a-truck event. Community Gatepath is an organization that provides education, training, and resources to children and adults with disabilities in the Bay Area. This event is a fundraiser for their organization where kids of all ages get to explore fire trucks, police cars and trucks, ambulances, etc. Volunteers help setup, clean up, help with trucks, arts and crafts, snack shack, check in, and t-shirt sales.

On May 7, 2014, ABC volunteers worked with non-profit Surfrider to help clean up Ocean Beach in San Francisco. We enjoyed a beautiful day on the beach and left it looking better than when we arrived.

On Saturday August 3, 2013, from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. ABC volunteers assisted at Community Gatepath's annual Inside and Out Sidewalk Sale, where we helped ring up customers and wrap items for this phenomenal sidewalk sale with proceeds going to funding some of Community Gatepath's amazing programs for children and adults with disabilities.

On November 6, 2013 at 5:30 our volunteers also worked with Meals On Wheels to create holiday cards to be included in their meal deliveries over the holiday season. We handmade 75 cards to distribute to the homebound seniors who are part of their much needed program in the San Francisco area. Thank you to the firm of Walkup, Melodia, Kelly & Schoenberger for letting us use their conference room for this fun activity.

The above events have been great opportunities for our members to connect with their communities and each other in a unique way. We hope more volunteers (attorneys, their families and friends) will join us in 2019!
